COLLEGE STATION — Anna head coach Seth Parr has heard the offseason conversations swirling about his team.

“Everybody’s worrying about Evan [Bullock], but we feel that we’ve got some players,” he said. “We saw the top 10, and we saw some guys up there that we thought we played well against, so that’s good motivation for our guys.”

After losing star quarterback Evan Bullock — the area’s leading 4A passer and SportsDay’s 2022 newcomer of the year — Anna was left with big shoes to fill. Last year’s offense was one of the most explosive in the state, but without the heart and soul of that group, it remained to be seen whether they could keep up that production.

But at the 7-on-7 state tournament in College Station this weekend, Anna quieted its critics. For the first time in program history, it reached the 7-on-7 state championship game, falling 27-20 to back-to-back Division II champion Hitchcock.

SAnna’s offense picked up right where it left off with a young, promising quarterback under center. Sophomore Ziondre Williams is expected to step into the starting role this season and had no trouble connecting with Anna’s deep receiving corps.

“We knew we had Zi,” Parr said. “We feel really comfortable at that position.”
